Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Berhampore West Bengal is set up in the year 1927 as Government Educational Institute to give advanced education to fabricate vocation in the field of Engineering.

The school was set up in the focal prison premises at Berhampore on nineteenth July 1927 as Government Silk Weaving and Dyeing Institute to bestow preparing to neighborhood craftsmans occupied with silk creation and silk weaving in Murshidabad region under the regulatory control of Directorate of businesses, Government of West Bengal.
The courses offered were, two years progressed course after registration and one year craftsman course after class VIII norm with an admission of 30 understudies in each course.
The foundation was moved to its current area at 4 Barrack Square (East) during 1932-33.
The school was redesigned in 1940 with another name Bengal Technological Institute with the presentation of 3 years confirmation course (licentiate) in Textile Technology and a long term craftsman course.
Considering the overall idea of the course the school was renamed as Berhampore Textile Institute in 1950.
