Description

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was set up by Government of India on February third 1947 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and later it joined the ICAR family in 1967.
Throughout more than 65 years the Institute has arisen as a main tropical marine fisheries research foundation on the planet.
Since its origin, the CMFRI filled essentially in its size and height and developed satisfactory exploration foundation and selected qualified staff.
During the main portion of the fifty years of its reality, the CMFRI dedicated its exploration consideration towards the assessment of marine fisheries arrivals and exertion, scientific classification of marine living beings and the bio-monetary qualities of the misused supplies of finfish and shellfish.
This exploration exertion contributed essentially to India’s marine fisheries improvement from a dominatingly distinctive, food fishery till the mid sixties to that of a complex, multi-gear, multispecies fisheries.
One of the significant accomplishments of CMFRI is the turn of events and refinement of a one of a kind strategy for assessment of fishery catch and exertion from the more than 8000 km coastline called the Delineated Multistage Random Sampling Method.
With this system the Institute is keeping up the National Marine Fisheries Data Center (NMFDC) with more than 9 million catch and exertion information records from all oceanic conditions of India of in excess of 1000 fished species.
During the mid nineteen seventies, the CMFRI understood that catch fisheries creation alone would not have the option to take into account the requirements of our developing populace and it turned out to be exceptionally certain that there was have to enhance catch fisheries with creation from beach front mariculture and ocean cultivating.
Therefore, a significant piece of the exploration exertion was redirected towards ocean cultivating and beach front mariculture and this exertion delivered rich profits as feasible homestead and incubation facility advancements for shrimp, eatable shellfish, mussel, mollusk and kelp and marine pearls.
Additionally, HR in mariculture was effectively evolved through the Postgraduate Program in Mariculture, offering MFSc and PhD courses.
